Last weeks discussion of the week we asked what you thought the current state of pigeon racing was? alarmingly the general consensus seemed to be that the sport of pigeon racing was dying and the main reason fanciers felt this way seemed to be cost. The Pigeon Insider has fanciers from all over the globe so it was pretty interesing to see some of our friends from other parts of the world say that the sport was growing. Maybe we can learn from each other and get the pigeon racing sport to grow universally all around the world by learning what each one of us are doing.
So in this weeks discussion of the week we would like to know?
What do you think fanciers can do to help the pigeon racing sport grow?
Post your comments on what you think each one of us can do to help promote the sport, also let us know if you have any ideas on how to lower costs etc. If your in an area where the sport is on the rise post your comments and let other fanciers know what has worked in your area.
We will be forwarding all of your comments to pigeon racing organizations around the world, Hopefully; together we can help the sport grow universally around the world.
First we need to make the public aware that Racing Pigeons aren’t Filthy street rats.
Second there should be a mentoring program where a old time takes a newbie under their wing ( no pun intended ) and teaches them the ropes. this way guys who really want to be in the sport will stay or if it’s too much work and time they can leave. this will eliminate a lot of frustration and guys shutting down before they get started.
People don’t realize how much time is required just to start up never mind to become competetive.
Also I think that the city ordinances need to be eased up a bit regarding loft size. I live in New York/Staten Island and the reg is 50 square feet. You can’t keep goldfish in that.
I happened to have lucked out and hooked up with an exceptional Flyer/Breeder(50yrs) who has given me more time and effort then you can imagine. He is always there to lend support and advice.
Well here in Romania the problem is that people are looking to make money from our pigeons.
We need people ho are looking to organize races for pure passion for the pigeons. Not to look how much money are they making from this race.
One other reason is that young flayers don’t have a chance if they don’t buy some good pigeons.
So it is all about he money. It is hard to have good results with a low budget.

I think we should provide more information in the media regarding this sport so that people can get an understanding on what the sport involves. Also provide information for the town villages that do not allow having pigeons so that they know they are not harming the birds or anybody in anyway.
Hi i have been in the sport for 30yrs+ , It is getting very competave now young flyers will not help new flyers they will not let much out the bag. The older flyer are the ones to help.I started the hard way.You must rember it is like an apprentaship i think you have your Higes and lowes. The biggest thing is to have your birds Healthy Getting back to the sport they should Go to schools and tell the younger people about pigeon racing and get them Interested even have a school loft so they can compete between schools.I think the cost off starting up is the downfall , Building a loft , clock . The cost off transporting the birds to the release point also the cost off Deasel . Then everething goes up.I think we should stick together on this ore our sport will DY>
first off let me start by saying there are alot of get points being made .me being a newbie have found that it seems to be the younger generation that dont want to help eachother out . out of the five people in my area that i have met , it was the older guys that look the time to share and show me things .hell two of them even gave me birds to get me started . the younger ones acted like i was there to rob them and couldnt get me off of their lawns quick enough . so what i think it takes is to want to help the next guy out . share your knowledge and try not to get wrapped up in competition or see the next guy as a threat .
At this moment in time i can’t see how we can make the sport less expensive for the fancier, pigeon corn is getting dearer becouse of poor crops, or so they say. Our entry fee per pigeon was 57p, then it went up to 65p and that depended on the price of DIESEL, that went up so now we pay 67p a bird, so our bird cost went up 10p extra this year, to some people its not a lot, add subs, add price of corn, transport to marking night. transport for training chucks. supplements. For channel racing they are talking £2 plus, they have not decided yet. If there is a solution it needs to be found sooner rather than later.
We started racing about 8 years ago and we paid $400 for the transport, and now 8 years later we still are paying $400,BUT the feed has gone up alot..
But too race 22 races for a price of $400 i find that thats very good,
I hear u asking why has the price stayed the same, well i will tell u..
We have changed trucks and got alot small truck, lucky it didnt cost us any extra too get a new truck so we must have had it in the bank….
We still have about the same amount of flyers in the fed and it doesnt seem too b dropping off but we arnt getting any more..
I so see that the only racing will b outta one loft races,,,,!!!!!
In saying that we are about too b building a new loft so fingers crossed racing will still b around for many years too come…
oh PS….
really are we any better off with electronic clocks, the price of rings are enough too blow me away, lets hope the prices of rings get better than they r or that in itself will have people walking away by there droves….
lucky people can still use the old clocks but if they were too ever bring a rule in that they couldnt that would b another 1/3 too leave the sport of pigeon racing..
I belive alot of the old guys would b too frightned too use the electroic system,i know myself at my young age of 40 i dont like trying anything new!!..:)
But its like any hobby everything cost,
if we painted for a hobby we would have too
pay for paints and brushes,
if our hobby was racing cars we would have
too pay for cars…
Its our hobby and its what we enjoy,
so the cost is the cost….
If we dont like the cost get outta the HOBBY..
We can always sit in front of a TV,
and not have too worry about paing for corn, transport,
and get fat,lazy and die..
I say die enjoying something,
we cant take our money with us,now can we…

Hi,
Here in our place, pigeon racing is growing but affected by factors such as limited knowledge sharing by fanciers, lack of publicity about the sport, high cost, limited no. of activities by the club, etc…
I think there are three reasons that many people do not race pigeons. (1) I just started getting into the sport and I talk to people at work that never even heard of the sport. (2) Another major factor is the cost of the sport. (3)The thing I found most frustrating is the fact that there are not many people that race pigeons that are willing to help someone get started. I did get help from a couple of white beards thank GOD, but they both live nowhere near me. It seems like nobody wants to help their future competition, but that could be really hurting the sport.
