What Can Fanciers Do To Help The Pigeon Racing Sport Grow?

Pigeon Racing GrowthLast weeks discussion of the week we asked what you thought the current state of pigeon racing was? alarmingly the general consensus seemed to be that the sport of pigeon racing was dying and the main reason fanciers felt this way seemed to be cost. The Pigeon Insider has fanciers from all over the globe so it was pretty interesing to see some of our friends from other parts of the world say that the sport was growing. Maybe we can learn from each other and get the pigeon racing sport to grow universally all around the world by learning what each one of us are doing.

So in this weeks discussion of the week we would like to know?

What do you think fanciers can do to help the pigeon racing sport grow?

Post your comments on what you think each one of us can do to help promote the sport, also let us know if you have any ideas on how to lower costs etc. If your in an area where the sport is on the rise post your comments and let other fanciers know what has worked in your area.

We will be forwarding all of your comments to pigeon racing organizations around the world, Hopefully; together we can help the sport grow universally around the world.

  1. I’M JUST STARTED AND I LOVE IT. NO’T IN A CUB.THANKING ABOUT GETING IN ONE BUT NOT SURE CAN SOME ONE HELP WITH A PAIR OF GOOD PIGEON’S I’M FROM RAYNE, LOUISIANA . 2. To all loft builders, I constructed a loft with a cement floor. The loft is enclosed by plywood walls on all four sides. The walls or nailed to a2x4 presser treated floor plate on all four sides. This plate is bolted to the cement floor. There are also 2×4’s 16″” on center from the roof to the floor plate on all four walls. I now would like to change my floor plan to a pull out expanded metal floor any ideas on how to do this. Thanks

  3. chris iam new to the sport ihave only been it for 9 months ,have not yet flew my birds in arace ihave only toss my bird at 70 miles they were back in 1hr 26min i thought that was good four 4 mounth old bird ,ihave made cotact with a man in myarea iplan to go visit him soon to see if iwant to fly local or just try one lofts maryland

  4. Every club needs to have a website as well as a Facebook page. These are how the majority of people are getting their info so we have to take advantage. Also, I think the AU an/or the IF screwed up big time by not advertising on the “Taking on Tyson” program. Something to just say “interested, go to our site and find a club near you”. I think something as simple as that could have added countless members. If we want to add members, we all need to treat the sport as a business, not to make money but to make it affordable and interesting to potential members.

    1. I totally agree with you Mike, I don’t think the organizations do anywhere near enough in terms of marketing and advertising for the sport, I personally have no idea where all that membership money goes.

      Thanks for the comment,
      Yours in the sport,
      -Chris

  5. dont give a new pigeon lover you 2 betst give him you best pigeon to start if your pigeons fly good every one will spend mony to do better and become the best

  6. I have been reading most of the comments and i agree with most our sport needs help. I find that most people have never herd about the sport. When i talk to people about our sport they ask why would you ever want pigeons. I reply that i love them and i think that they love me to. I do think that we need new members i have donated great pigeons to my fanicers over the years. If the better flyers in each club would donate birds off of their race team that are great racers but that are getting too old to fly to new members. Help them find building materials and design a loft that will make them successful. clubs need to make the first year free as these new flyers. They are having a lot of cost put on them just to start. And maybe a 1/2 cost the second year and allow them to use old clocks. And more than anything clubs need to work with one another and stop all the fighting. Some of the articles are right kids have to many other things to do. But if parents would get them involved in birds maybe some of them would have a release for the problems that they have in school. They kept me out of trouble as a kid before i had them i was always in trouble. They are very calming and after a hard day they help me relax. I maybe different than most pigeon racers as i race for me and not the wins. If they come it is great but not the end of the world. I just look to improve and one way is to improve our sport we need to get the word out be involved with our clubs. Work with cities to promote our sport. I have started many flyers some are still in the sport and some are gone. The ones that are still in try to help new flyers as well. If new flyers need help we need to do all that we can to help not just with birds but with training. And showing them how to get birds in condition. When i see a new flyer win i am the first one to tell them great job. If they are struggling i will be their to help them through it if possible. We really need to work with each other and not against each other. It is up to all of us to promote, promote. It is our sport and it would be a shame to let it die.

  7. I think that some pigeon associations, should get their fingers out and create some community lofts. Obviously run a responsible fancier and involve a limited number of local kids. Get some suppliers in on the act too.
Maybe have a few of these up and down the country.
    School visits etc.
We could put an educational twist on it too.
Maths, science, biology, English. It all comes into it.
    Just a thought.

    1. i tottally agree we need the younger generations to start up and get involved you could even introduce a set amount of young fanciers to your local club by breeding 1 pair per youngster per club member to set them up also donate or hold a raffle for 1 or more junior t3 clocks

      1. and pay 1st years membership could rn along side a school project of some sort or people with learning difficulties

  8. As with all sports we must get new young people involved. For the most part pigeon racing is not a spectator sport, thus being harder to get the general public intrested and involvement. I believe some benefit races would improve our sport and get a very positive public awareness to the sport. Races where part of the proceedes go to benifit orginazations like The American Socity, or any local cause that would shed a faborable light on the sport. The more we can make people aware of our sport the more support we will get.

  9. Raising homing pigeons in and of itself is quite therapeutic. The prison system should benefit from the positive effect this sport will have on the inmates. Mike Tyson should probably be approached to promote this to the proper authorities. Similarly the government should sponsor such a program to help the elderly in long term care facilities and nursing homes. Even the school children will benefit from such a hobby if it is promoted.
