In this video Dennis Weinreich of Hawkbait lofts shows us how he mixes feed for his breeders. He starts off with a 15% commercial pigeon feed mix that you can get at any feed supply and to that he adds…

  • 1 cup Maple Peas
  • 1 cup Safflower
  • 1 cup 16% chicken pellets (helps to raise the protein content and also has lots of vitamins and minerals)
  • 1 cup wild birdsees (it’s loaded with vitamins and minerals and is good for the birds coat as well as helping to raise the protein content)
  • 1 cup organic rice (brown and white organic rice mix)
  • 1 cup Spanish Peanuts (helps add fat to the feed which is good for the babies)
  • Petimine (added a few times a week, rich in B vitamin and soy protein)
  • Olive Oil (about 1 tablespoon)

This is a great feed mix for breeders rich in vitamins and minerals and high in protein to help the parents stay energized and the babies grow nice and strong.

  1. Its easier to buy feed at feed mill stores or some flyer’s that get their feed from pigeon feed companies and they sell it to other pigeon flyer’s.

  2. I prefer to buy the feed I need for breeding and racing from pigeon feed supply then buy the craps from Wal-Mart and other chicken feed stores .

    Guys don’t use commercial feed ! 🙂

  3. Dr. Chalmers writes in articles on this site that maple peas have a compound that stops digestion of protein and should be no more than 5% of the mix and fed with cereal grains. Other peas donot have it and are ok to feed.

  4. Just was at walmart for bird seed. read the labels and the warning said: Wild bird feeding only. do not eat, or feed to pets and pet birds. wash hands after filling feeders. There is feed from over seas and the usa that is treated with pesticide powder for storage and the processor did not polish and air clean the feed for pet consumption. It would increase to cost to walmart. The feed we are seeing now was harvested last year.

Add the oil before adding any powder. It sticks easier to the moistened feed.

  5. Google turns up a bunch of results for petamine. Here is one link from Amazon

    http://www.amazon.com/ScottS-Petamine-Breeding-Formula-lbs/dp/B0002ASDDY

    8 oz. for $3.70 U.S.

“Feed to adult breeding birds during the breeding season. This is the original Petamine formula. Dietary enrichment product for all adult birds during the breeding cycle High protein, high energy formula enhanced with vitamin A & E to encourage and support breeding Provides for healthy egg development”

  6. I do not understand the meaning of the word petimine
Does anyone know a synonym for a European language
    other than English

      1. Yes he started with 15% base mix but… the 1st Terry is asking for the quantity of this base mix he started with – as in how many cups of base feed. I too had seen that there is no mention on the starting quantity of Base Mix – so if it is only 1 cup of base mix as compared to 6 cups of base mix then the entire formula is thrown off. The typed description of the mix also does not include a starting quantity of base mix.
