Pigeons with Blue Tongue or Blue Tissue
I received a few questions about fanciers having pigeons with blue tongues or blue tip tongues so I wanted to address it with a short post. The blue tongue can mean many different things from something simple such as wrong diet to more serious like bad circulation.
Should you feed high protein right through the week, the digestive system becomes sluggish and the breast may become blue in color with a blue tip on the tongue also. Try changing your pigeons diet and giving your birds a strong dose of garlic in the water to help correct this.
However, When tissues that are normally red turn blue, this is because there is less oxygen in these tissues. This can have several reasons. For example when the tip of the tongue of a pigeon is cold, there will be less blood circulation and the tip will appear blue. It doesn’t have to mean anything. If it’s associated with blue flesh it can be a problem certainly for birds that have to perform.
Again blue tongue can be caused by multiple factors like inadequate nutrition/supplementing, inadequate training, dehydration (shock in extreme cases), bad circulation etc…Try changing their diet, giving garlic and keeping a close eye on them to see if their health declines and if you have room in your loft quarantine them as a precaution untill you are certain that they are healthy.

please advise I have gotten birds [young birds] they are not up to my stand..either to big or to small thebirds are from top stock, but he always takes the better youngster of the two ,when the young birds don’t perform he tell me that my loft manag…is wrong[he being a top fancier who has help me in the past.] I think that he afraid of me beating him,his name t.adimoller from trinidad.his birds fly roof top high while mine fly high up help..
As John Glemser states check the ventilation first. This and improper feeding are usually the causes of blue flesh. I have seen to many times what improper ventilation can do. Birds don’t get enough oxygen, are restless from humidity too high as well as overcrowding. Ventilation alone can cause more problems than most think when not right. Common sense goes a long way.

Check that the mineral intake be suffeciant as well, else a 3 day antibiotics like Terramycin or Aureomycin should also help.

Hi Guys!
Here in S.A we are one month away from our “young bird series” and many fanciers have changed diets of the racers from a breeding mix / off-season mix to a high protein racing mix to which is added up tp 50% barley or black sunflower seed. This transition is done approximately 3 weeks before training in most cases!
It was noted that “blue tongue” was found amongst some of the older racers and the youngsters, however, after this change in diet it appears to have disappeared. It must also be borne in mind that they are now more active as their training program has started and they are no longer being fed and “locked – up” with the occaisonal open-loft for a bath!
This anomaly in my view is if no real concern unless accompanied by visible signs of respiratory disease or perhaps canker.
Anyone else have the same experience?

thanks john i have just changed my loft a couple of weeks ago and found the air ciculation in the loft is not as flucuating as before i changed it. they have just finished rearing and are racing in two weeks
Frist thing check your air flow.then Put the birds on barley 7 days this will help.Air must come in and move out check that frist or call me 856-227-4196 or email me [email protected] we can fix it
